Heading North - Saturday...

Saturday was pretty foggy - which was a bit of a shame as you couldn't see far out to sea. However, it didn't stop the views of both the sea and the coastal scenery being breathtaking.

Here's a shot of a spectacular beach...

And this is Dave, in front of that rock...

We stopped at Mendocino, where they film <something or other> - this is Ann in front of the church that is there, that features frequently in the series:

Heading North from Mendocino, eventually Route 1 crosses the mountains, away from the sea, and joins Highway 101. All along Route 1 and Highway 101, there are signs advertising "fun" things to do on the way - haunted houses, world's biggest apple - that kind of thing. This one, however, we couldn't resist:

Susie the Saturn car is here being driven through a tree by Ann. That's a real tree (pictured to the left) - and in case you can't read the sign on the tree above our car, its called "The Chandelier Tree". A 2400 year old Redwood, its 315 feet high and 21 feet in diameter at the base where someone cut a hole in it... It costs $3.00 to drive through it, and if you really want to go, the tree can be found at Leggett, California just where the 101 meets Route 1.

Anyway - on to Highway 101, which goes straight up to the Oregon coast. As we left the drive-through tree there was a sign:

Still a long way to go then! We drove North and into Oregon by Saturday late afternoon and got about 100 miles into Oregon before stopping at a Best Western in Bandon. Nice hotel, good food. Sleep.

The pictures of the Sunday mad dash up the rest of the Oregon coast and into Washington are here...
