An earthquake strikes Seattle

(Scroll down for the photos - or click here)

Dave and Ann were at home - Dave was working, Ann was eating her breakfast, when the earthquake struck. The apartment shook severely prompting us to leave, shall we say, smartly...

Phones went out, internet service went out. We lost power, but only for a few seconds until some emergency generator somewhere cut in. The lifts descended to ground floor, opened their doors and then refused to go anywhere.

Eventually we returned to the apartment and got changed. Dave finished up for the day and we left to sit in a bar to be near people...

The statistics

Where?
Epicentre was about 30 miles south of Seattle

When?
10:55am Pacific Time (about 18:55 GMT) for about 30-40 seconds. (Which about an eternity if you're in it!)

How strong?
6.8 (that's pretty strong)
Felt hundreds of miles away - Los Angeles, Vancouver, and Salt Lake City, Utah

How bad?
1 man died of a heart attack attributed to the earthquake. 5 or so critically injured. Others hospitalized with various injuries. Significant damage to buildings in Seattle and Olympia.

Considering the strength - we got off lightly.

Below are some photos borrowed off the TV station websites www.king5.com, www.komotv.com, www.kirotv.com - top marks, by the way, to these TV stations for excellent coverage during the day.

The photos...

Fenix Underground - that red car in the foreground took it badly

Buildings lost parts of walls - rubble fell into the street

Falling rubble crushed this vehicle - I think it was an SUV

Same again - the wall dropped off this building onto the parked cars below

This is a crack in a runway at the Boeing Field - where they build the aeroplanes...

This is Highway 101 - part of one carriageway just fell away
