Seacliff on the Bluff - Friday night

Seacliff on the Bluff was rather lovely. But there's a story...

Firstly, they only had a single room left - here's a picture of Ann standing in the room:

So - what's all that criss-cross pattern in the mirror? Was the place haunted? Was a trick of the light? Who knows... The room was great - high vaulted ceilings, a gas fire and jacuzzi bath for two.

Ann and I went for a meal to the local hostelry, and then returned to the hotel to check out the jacuzzi - where there was even a free bottle of champagne which Ann and I drank sitting in the bath. Lovely! The Pacific Ocean crashed on the shore about 50 feet away. We turned the lights out and it was DARK!

We went to bed and slept very peacefully until 3:18am. A blood curdling scream! "Aaaaahhhhhahahaaaaaaaahhhhhwwwwwooooooooaaaaahhhhhhhhh" it went for about ten seconds.

Silence.

It was 3:18 (the time is engraved on my memory). It was about as dark as it was possible for it to be, and Ann and I were sitting bolt upright. "What the f*** was that?" one of us said.

Well - it was probably the guy next door having a nightmare. It could have been a coyote. At 3:18 in the pitch dark it felt that the most likely culprit was the guy next door having had his insides ripped out by a mad axe murdered. This self same axe murdered was at this very moment making his way to the next door room to satisfy his thirst for blood and pain... It was tough to sleep and Ann made me get up and turn on the laptop for some light in the room. Actually, I was quite keen to turn it on for some light and didn't need any persuading!

Anyway - that was the night in the possibly haunted, possibly stalked by mad axe murderer, Seacliff on the Bluff. The view from the window the next day was spectacular,..

(Above) That's the Pacific Ocean on the other side of the beach - where an entire tree had been washed up. Below is the view to the left up the beach:

Below is the view a bit to right down the beach...

It was Saturday morning and time to hit the road and head North. We had the rest of Route 1 to do, before joining Highway 101 and traveling up the Oregon coast. Click here for the next stage...
